Definition and Nature of the Work
Painters and paperhangers apply finishes to walls, ceilings, and other surfaces. Although painting and paperhanging are two separate trades, many workers have mastered both. Painters apply paint, varnish, and other finishes with brushes, rollers, and spray machines. These finishes decorate and protect surfaces both inside and out. Paperhangers apply wallpaper, vinyl, and fabric coverings to preserve and decorate the indoor surfaces of older buildings as well as those under construction.
Painting and coating workers cover manufactured goods with paint, finish, or other coating solution and are employed by many different kinds of industries. They paint items made of metal or woodanything from pencils to automobiles. They apply paint, varnish, primer, rust preventive, lacquer, and other finishes. They coat candy with chocolate or other sugar solution. They coat electrical wires with insulating materials.
Painting and coating workers often have job titles that reflect the technique they use and the products on which they work. Dippers immerse articles in vats
Painters must apply the paint quickly and smoothly. They must know what materials were used to make the paint. Different materials, such as plaster, wood, brick, and metal, require different paints. A painter must have a good eye for color to mix and match paints.
The job description of a house painter includes being skilled at working with many types of painting tools. Exteriors of houses are commonly painted with sprayers, and finishing touches are added with brushes. The painter may also use a sprayer for the interior of certain types of new construction. Interiors of buildings that are already being lived in or worked in are painted with rollers and brushes, as well as texturing tools. House painters must be careful to keep paint off of trees, flowers and shrubs outside, and furniture, carpet and other possessions inside.
Physical Requirements
Professional house painters must be in very good physical condition. They stand much of time and often climb ladders. They regularly bend, stretch and kneel. They also need strong arms because they commonly spend all day painting.

Education and Training Requirements
There are no set education requirements for painting and coating workers. A high school diploma is helpful, as is completion of courses at community colleges or vocational schools. Training is generally given informally on the job, lasting from a few days to several months. Some processes, such as the application of powdered coatings, take longer to learn. New workers usually learn by watching experienced painters at work. They begin with simple tasks and gradually move on to more difficult jobs.
Most transportation equipment painters start as helpers and gain their skills on the job over one to two years. The National Institute for Automotive Excellence offers certification based on satisfactory completion of a written examination and experience in the field. Achieving the certification can help transportation equipment painters advance in the field.
Painters and decorators put the finishing touches to a new building, but are also called upon from time to time when a home, office, shop or public building has to be renovated or redecorated.
Painters are virtually the last people on site, which means that the actual finish of the building on which they are working is entirely in their hands. As a result, they must be craftsmen of the highest caliber, for they can either spoil or perfect the work of all other trades that preceded them.
This is a trade where the material with which the artisan works has changed dramatically over the years to adapt to modern needs
Before painters and paperhangers put on the paint or paper, they clean the dirt, oil, and grease from the surfaces to be covered. Old paint and wall covering must be removed; they are heated or wetted down and then scraped off. Cracks and holes made by nails are filled and smoothed over. This process is called spackling.
Salary and Employment Outlook
According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, about 42 percent of all painters are self-employed. The bureau includes paperhangers in its figures, but notes that 98 percent of the category is made up of painters.
There is always work for painters, and the bureau predicts additional job growth through 2016 to be fueled primarily by retiring homeowners who plan to move and will need their current house painted to sell.
Rental properties also should account for house painter demand. Salaries for painters working in the area of residential building construction as of 2008 were an average of about $16 an hour, or about $34,000 annually.
House painters spend part of the week responding to requests for bids for projects. They might paint just the interior or the exterior of a house, or they might do all the painting and finishing for a new construction project. After a bid is accepted, they meet with the homeowner to discuss in more detail the colors and textures preferred and specialty finishes. They then select the appropriate materials for the job. They match colors, and they may mix paint or they may have the paint automatically mixed at the shop. They also choose brushes, rollers and texturing tools, such as sponges.

Transportation equipment painters, or automotive painters, are among the most highly skilled painting and coating workers. These workers are employed in auto body repair and paint shops, where they refinish old and damaged cars, trucks, and buses. Their work includes preparing vehicles for painting, mixing paints, and performing intricate and detailed work with manual spray guns.
House painters must prepare the surfaces, or the new paint will have discolored areas or begin flaking off quickly. For the exterior, a painter power washes the surfaces to remove as much dirt and bug residue as possible. He may need to scrape away existing paint with scrapers, wire brushes and sanders. Many professional house painters will repair or replace rotted wood. Inside, painters wash walls to remove dirt, fingerprints, grease and smoke, and they fill any cracks and nail holes before painting. They also repair plaster and remove wallpaper.

A general contractor is a group or individual that contracts with another organization or individual (the owner) for the construction, renovation or demolition of a building, road or other structure. A general contractor is defined as such if it is the signatory as the builder of the prime construction contract for the project.
A general contractor is responsible for the means and methods to be used in the construction execution of the project in accordance with the contract documents. Said contract documents usually include the contract agreement including budget, the general and special conditions and the plans and specification of the project that are prepared by a design professional such as an architect.
A general contractor usually is responsible for the supplying of all material, labor, equipment, (engineering vehicles and tools) and services necessary for the construction of the project. To do this it is common for the general contractor to subcontract part of the work to other persons and companies that specialize in these types of work. These are called subcontractors.
General contractors conducting work for government agencies are typically referred to as prime contractors. The responsibilities of a prime contractors working under a contract are essentially identical to those outlined above. In many cases, prime contractors will delegate portions of the contract work to subcontractors.
In the United Kingdom and certain former British Commonwealth countries the term 'general contractor' was gradually superseded by 'main contractor' during the early twentieth century. This followed the practice of major professional, trade and consumer organisations issuing standard forms of contract for undertaking the variety of construction works spanning the whole spectrum of the industry. It was and is usual for the term main contractor to be used and defined in all these contract documents, and as a result the term general contractor became an anachronism.[1]

The examples and perspective in this article deal primarily with the United States and do not represent a worldwide view of the subject. Please improve this article and discuss the issue on the talk page.
Most contractors are required to be licensed in each state and may be required to take an oral and written exam. To check for contractor license requirements, you may co]d in the law by each state and are usually considered those who contract, bid, negotiate a price or offers to construct, supervise, oversee, schedule, direct, alter, repair, install, improve, move, demolish, furnish labor, etc. In addition, there are various types: building (residential and commercial), electrical, plumbing, mechanical, highway, environmental remediation.
As an owner
Occasionally the entity commissioning the construction of the building chooses to act as the general contractor. In such cases, they work directly with the subcontractors and take care of the administration and organization of the various subcontractors.
Under these conditions the owner takes on all liability for proper sequencing of the work, and dealing with the realities of construction.
Owners considering this approach should keep in mind that general contractors make a living working with known subcontractors. An established General Contractor will have established relationships that will outlast one construction project, and the subcontractors will acknowledge this with their cooperation. Owners seldom have this advantage, and most subcontractors will recognize the risk of working with a one time client with higher bids.
As an alternative, Owner Builder approach to building its own residence can have risks and benefits. As a novice in the business Owner Builder is open to a number of common mistakes as overbuilding for the neighborhood, exposing to liabilities, lack of subcontractor management skills, and others. But with businesslike full time approach to the project saving benefits can be substantial. Owner builder will care more and know better his own project than any General Contractor who often manages many projects on a tight schedule. Subcontractor loyalty and discounted prices to General Contractor are not a rule at all. As economy worsens, and many builders struggle to find work, Owner Builder can pick the best talent at the price that is only limited to his (her) negotiating skills.
As a business owner
For legal reasons it can be easier to hire and also release a contractor compared to a employee that has Permanent employment. Large numbers of business owners choose to hire contractors because of uncertainty within their business or have constraints such as maternity, illness or other legal factors which entail that hiring a permanent employee is not a feasible option. [2]
General contractor example
An owner or real estate developer would develop a program of their needs and select a site (often with an architect). The Architect assembles a design team of consulting engineers and other experts to design the building and specify the building systems to meet those needs. Today contractors frequently participate in the design team effort by providing pre-design services where they will help in providing more accurate estimation of budget and scheduling during design to improve the over all economy of the project. Otherwise the general contractor is hired just to build the building(s) at the close of the design phase. The owner, architect, and general contractor work closely together to meet deadlines and budget. The general contractor then works with subcontractors to ensure quality standards in addition to timeline and budget. Often there will be disagreements between the contractor and the architect over style vs. function. These arguments may lead to lawsuits which most times can prolong or even stop a project.
