Do yourself a favor and save yourself a lot of painting heartache by allowing a professional painter to do the work for you.You would not hire a plumber to fix an electrical problem. Some people are born to do certain things and born with the skills to be able to do these certain things, not everybody can paint ,and if you think you can paint. maybe you should really leave it to the experts to the painting project for you instead. I have been painting houses for more than 17 years and I think I qualify as an expert. I learned the painting trade through my father.and he had been painting for 28 years before he retired in 2003. Steps to proper painting Full evaluation of interior/exterior "see what is wrong with the paint ie,moisture issues, rotted wood, improper water runoff, interior water seepage, flaking paint, previous contractor painting workand last but not least did you use GOOD Qualty paint" We live in Ct we get snow, rain, hot humid weather in the summer ,and ice buid up in the winter.
Its enough to damage any paint job.By just looking at a houses construction and proper rain drainoff can save years of non repainting. Fix those issues and then move on to proper paint preparation Power washing exterior surfaces This is the first and most important step as paint simply won't stick well to dirty surfaces. It's safer to use a hose and brush attachment than a power washer as power washers are known to often cause damage .
Also consider using Bleach and or anti fungal cleaner if necessary to remove mold or mildew. Step 2: Scrapping For paint that is layered or tough to remove use a rotary paint remover which has more power to remove the paint. Some new improvements in painting removal have taken place dust free sand removing sanders have been invented which are a great chice. Step 3: Sand and Repair The next step is to sand the edges of the area where the paint was removed to help the new paint cover and hide the edge. Step 4: Taping and Covering.

The better you cover the easier the cleanup at the end. Step 5 Prime .Use oil primer for bare wood spots as to elliminate any wood from bleading through. Step 6 Paint .Use the highest quality paint you can afford. Now adays there are paints that can last a lifetime or 25-30 years. Apply with airless sprayers to allow for maximum mil coverage.Buck brush any coarse wood allow paint to dry at least 48 hours and then reapply a second coat,if need. Lots of reasons why you as a homeowner should think about hirining a Pro-contractor to handle any painting project

Step 1: Washing the Exterior
This is the first and most important step as paint simply won't stick well to dirty surfaces. It's safer to use a hose and brush attachment than a power washer as power washers are known to often cause damage to the soffits and can cause warping too. The last thing you want is to paint onto a damp surface which would be prone to mold or mildew growth. Depending on the amount of dirt on the exterior of your home, you may need to use rags and sponges to help remove stuck on dirt. Also consider using liquid soap and or anti fungal cleaner if necessary to remove mold or mildew.

Step 2: Scrapping
Make sure to have your protective goggles on and begin scrapping any loose or peeling paint. For paint that is multi layered or just tough to remove use a heat gun or rotary paint remover which has more power to remove the paint. Use proper safety precautions while using either of these tools such as wearing work gloves and keeping both tools away from your body or flammable objects.

Step 3: Sand and Repair
The next step is to sand the edges of the area where the paint was removed to help the new paint cover and hide the edge. Caulk any cracks, seams or gaps with paintable exterior caulk. It's important to be meticulous near the doors and windows so that the paint will stick properly in these areas. For wood siding, you should also fill any gouges or holes with exterior grade patching compound.

Step 4: Taping and Covering
This step involves taping any areas which you do not want painted such as windows. Also make sure you cover anywhere that you do not want paint dripping onto, including shrubs, bushes, porches, etc. Plastic tarps or drop cloths will do a great job
