Shelton, CT is a small town nestled in the Naugatuck Valley in Fairfield County, Connecticut. Here's a brief history of our town. Shelton had it's surge of growth during the Industrial Revolution of the 1800's, and when you come to visit you'll be amazed at how almost everything looks the same as it did at the turn of the century.

Even the old stone walls that have lined the homesteads, fields, and woods for centuries are still there, and so amazing to see. We hope you enjoy the pictures and that some day you'll be able to come and visit this quaint historic town.

Edward Shelton

The town is named after Edward N. Shelton born in 1812, who was the great grandson of Daniel Shelton, who was a settler here before the 1700's.

Edward. Shelton formed the Ousatonic Water Power Company, and organized the building of a dam on the Housatonic River to use as a source of power. The picture on the right is Edward Shelton 1812 - 1894.

Seal of the City of Shelton

The Seal of the City of Shelton has 3 graphics, the top left is a picture of 2 small homes nestled around a flowing river. The second graphic is of a salt box house with a lean to. The bottom graphic is an old factory, with a ship sailing by, probably depicting the Industrial Revolution, and the rise in productivity. Click here to view a larger version of the City Seal..

Vinyl siding is plastic exterior cladding for a house, used for decoration and weatherproofing, as an alternative to traditional wood siding or other materials such as aluminum or fiber cement siding. It is an engineered product, manufactured primarily from polyvinyl chloride, or PVC, resin, giving vinyl siding its name. In the UK and New Zealand a similar material is known as uPVC weatherboarding.

Approximately 80 percent of its weight is PVC resin, with the remaining 20 percent being composed of other ingredients that establish color, opacity, gloss, impact resistance, flexibility, and durability.[1] It is the most commonly installed exterior cladding for residential construction in the United States and Canada. There is controversy concerning the use of this product within the building industry, especially within the growing green building industry, due to environmental concerns in the processing, manufacturing, and disposal of the product.[2] Vinyl siding was introduced to the exterior cladding market in the late 1950s. It was first produced by an independently-owned manufacturing plant in Columbus, Ohio. The process was

Since building materials expand and contract with changing temperature and humidity, it is not practical to make rigid joints between the siding elements. Sidi

ng may be made of wood, metal, plastic (vinyl), masonry , or composite materials. It may be attached directly to the building structure (studs in the case of wood construction), or to an intermediate layer of horizontal planks called sheathing.

Contents [Vertical horizontal siding may have a cover over the joint: board and batten, popular in American wooden Carpenter Gothic houses; or less commonly behind the joint ? batten and board.

Plywood sheet siding is sometimes used on inexpensive buildings, sometimes with grooves to imitate vertical shiplap siding. (One example of such grooved plywood siding is the type called T1-11 ["tee-one-eleven"?often written T111 ].)

gland construction, and was revived in Shingle Style and Queen Anne style architecture in the late 19th century.

Hawley School is another old and famous landmark. Constructed in the 1920s, it has been used as a whole-town school, a high school, and an elementary school. It is currently an elementary school. Though it has been many different school functions, its original section has remained much the same. Two additions have been added since its construction.

local region. For regions that receive a lot of rain, EIFS (Exterior Insulation and Finish Systems), have been known to suffer underlying wood rot problems with excessive moisture exposure.

The environmental impact of masonry depends on the type of material used. In general, concrete and concrete based materials are intensive energy materials to produce. However, the long durability and minimal maintenance of masonry sidings mean that less energy is required over the life of the siding.

Composite siding Various composite materials are also used for siding: asphalt, asbestos, fiber cement, aluminum (ACM) etc. They may be in the form of shingles or boards, in which case they are sometimes called clapboard.

Beautification and added features

Wallpapering and painting walls or installing wood panelling. Adding new flooring such as carpets, tiling, linoleum, wood flooring, or solid hardwood flooring. Upgrading cabinets, fixtures, and sinks in the kitchen and bathroom.

Saving energy Homeowners may reduce utility costs with: Energy-efficient insulation, windows, and lighting. Renewable energy with biomass pellet stoves, wood-burning stoves, solar panels, wind turbines, Programmable thermostats,[1] and geothermal exchange heat pumps

Safety and preparedness Emergency preparedness safety measures such as:

Comfort Upgrading heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems (HVAC) Increasing the capacity of plumbing and electrical systems. Waterproofing basements. Soundproofing rooms, especially bedrooms and baths.

Maintenance and repair Maintenance projects can include: Roof tear-off and replacement. Concrete and masonry repairs to the foundation and chimney. Repairing plumbing and electrical systems.

Additional space Additional living space may be added by: Turning marginal areas into livable spaces such as turning basements into recrooms, home theaters, or home offices -- or attics into spare bedrooms. Extending one's house with rooms added to the side of one's home or, sometimes, extra levels to the original roof.

Home fire and burglar alarm systems. Fire sprinkler systems to protect homes from fires Security doors, windows, and shutters. Storm cellars as protection from tornadoes and hurricanes. Bomb shelters especially during the 1950s as protection from nuclear war. Backup generators for providing power during power outages

Professional versus do-it-yourself There are three main approaches to managing a home improvement project: hiring a general contractor, directly hiring specialized contractors, or doing the work oneself.

A general contractor oversees a home improvement project that involves multiple trades. A general contractor acts as project manager, providing access to the site, removing debris, coordinating work schedules, and performing some aspects of the work.

35% of homeowners, according to the Remodeling Sentiment Report bypass the general contractor, and hire tradesmen themselves, including plumbers, electricians and roofers.

Another strategy is to "do it yourself" (DIY). 67% of homeowners report they will do some work themselves when they remodel according to the Remodeling Sentiment Report. Several major American retailers, such as Home Depot and Lowes, specialize in selling materials and tools for DIY home improvement. These stores host classes and carry numerous books to teach customers how to do the work themselves. DIY websites also provide information.

Playing a critical role are the professional associations created to represent the architects, architectural technologists, interior designers and skilled trades that provide specialized services to homeowners. These associations provide credibility, trade guidelines and useful information to help homeowners learn more about the trades they are about to hire.[citation needed]

Associations include:

Association of Registered Interior Designers of Ontario The American Institute of Architects [edit] Renovation Contractors Perhaps the most important or visible professionals in the renovation industry are renovation contractors or skilled trades. CT

There are several types of companies that contribute to the booming renovation industry. Supply businesses such as Home Depot, Lowes, Home Hardware and Rona Lansing provide all the materials and tools necessary to facilitate home renovations. Many online companies and home improvement websites offer tips, guidelines and trends to give homeowners ideas for design and d?cor.
